Jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, corrects irregularities of the jaw bones and realigns the jaws and teeth to improve the way they work. Making these corrections may also improve your facial appearance.
Jaw surgery may be a corrective option if you have jaw problems that can't be resolved with orthodontics alone. In most cases, you also have braces on your teeth before surgery and during recovery after surgery until healing and alignment are complete. Dr O’Leary will work with your oral (maxillofacial) surgeon to determine your treatment plan.
When you attend for a consultation you will complete a medical history form and also our smile evaluation form, when this is complete we will take some photographs of your teeth, then, Dr O’Leary will perform a complete examination of your smile and bite alignment.
She will then sit down and go through her findings with you and she will answer any questions you may have while discussing your treatment options with you.

The type of discomfort you experience depends on the type of brace you have fitted. Fitting the brace itself does not hurt but as your teeth move it is usual to experience tenderness for the first 3-5 days.
This is probably our most frequently asked question. The length of treatment varies from patient to patient but in general treatment can take anything from 6 to 24 months
Yes, wearing retainers after your braces have been removed is an essential part of your treatment. To keep your smile and your teeth in position after your braces are removed you will need to wear your retainers as specified by Dr O’Leary.
